Among the corners of the Internet, there are videos and photos that end up being viral without any information about their origin, interesting phenomena captured by surveillance cameras, leaving mysterious events worthy of investigation documented, often these videos end up being false, while others are not found any trace of editing, and seem to be legitimate.

Today we analyze the case of a video that toured the web a long time ago and that attracted the attention of many people given the argument presented. The clip is recorded from a surveillance camera during the night, people walk and exercise in an alley with no apparent rain, one of the passers-by appears on the scene running, when suddenly he is struck by a lightning bolt that makes him fall and remain motionless for a few seconds on the ground.

The man gets up with difficulty, confused, walks a little and does not finish standing up when a second lightning strike hits him a few seconds later, causing him to fall violently again. However, miraculously, the man rises and slowly leaves the place, ending the video and leaving the Internet users skeptical and surprised.

Surviving a lightning strike

The storyline of the video is surprising, although it has served for jokers who love black humor for being a scene similar to a comedy movie with very bad luck, there are also thousands of comments that say it is an edited video, since surviving the impact of lightning is something very difficult, and if it was two beams, the possibility is reduced to none.

Adding up conditions about how rare it is to capture the phenomenon of a direct electrical discharge on the ground on video, it is even more difficult to record the moment when a lightning strike a person, and if the act is repeated within a few seconds of each other and the subject himself, the case becomes somewhat ridiculous.

But the assumptions were not just theories, immediately some people began to do some tests and studies to determine the veracity of the video, editing specialists also analyzed the clip and began to draw conclusions using very basic arguments about audiovisual art, teaching Internet users that they should not believe in everything that can be found on the Internet.

Video with illogical plans

We studied the case and decided to analyze some frames, pictures, details, close-ups, shadows and frames, the results achieved did not make any sense according to what is intended to show in the video, for example, the lightning itself is an intense and bright light, the electricity of this type of discharge generates a huge source of energy and clarity capable of illuminating the sky of a small city briefly, being visible from miles away.

This is how the first inconsistency arises in the video, during the impact of the supposed lightning, the shadow of the car parked on the side of the road should not be there, it should have disappeared because it is in front of a new source of light that totally changes the direction of this shadow, and that illuminates the whole sector, doing the same with the shade of trees.

Even the boy’s own shadow is still projected, this is a clear indication that this video was probably edited using frames modified with Photoshop or visual effects, raising the brightness, playing with the levels or something similar in the curve of contrasts and shadows, so that when the exposure levels are increased, the image can have an additional effect similar to the impact of lightning on the street.

Let’s take a look at the second ray that falls on the man, to make it easier to observe, we will place it next to the image of the first ray, even if the frames change, the shadows of the same should be affected by this new electric discharge, however, the shadows are still exactly the same, they are located in the same wrong place, where they should not be, the lightning must now be the dominant source.

In this way, the electrical discharges should generate a massive light that is completely reflected in all the bodies of the image, and also cast shadows in a direction determined by the vertical lightning strike. Even if we place one image over another, taking into account that the light has changed direction, we can notice that all shadows and places with high exposure retain their location in the same place.

Nothing really changes in the scene, the exposure increases, but it should be much more than as shown in the video, where an electric shock is actually happening everything lights up and there are no big shadows left, much less among the leaves of a tree where you can easily slip the intensity of the electric light.

Recreating the assembly

impact of lightning is something very difficult, and if it was two beams, the possibility is reduced to none.

We start with an increase in brightness in the whiter areas and we can see that it looks almost the same as in the video, very bright in the foreground with the same illuminated spots on the trees and in general. Our test looks a little softer, because we have to use a blurred diffusion layer, or lower the resolution to make it look more mysterious.

In general, this is all they have done, playing with the frames by editing a couple of them in Photoshop, after which they added the image of a lightning bolt in some transparent background format, taken from Google or anywhere else, put together the composition and this is the result, a totally fake viral video with millions of views on the web.
